Fall Yard Cleanup Checklist for Western New York

Western New York winters are hard on yards. A little work in October and November makes spring much easier.

Leaves and lawn

  • Remove thick leaf layers so they do not mat down and smother the grass over winter.
  • Keep mowing until growth stops, gradually lowering the height for the last cut.
  • Overseeding and fall fertilizing are common in our climate; ask a lawn-care pro what suits your yard.

Trees and shrubs

  • Have dead or hanging limbs removed before heavy snow and ice can bring them down.
  • Wrap or protect young or thin-barked trees and shrubs in exposed spots.
  • Rake mulch back from trunks so it does not trap moisture against the bark.

Beds and gardens

  • Cut back spent perennials, or leave seed heads for birds if you prefer.
  • Plant spring bulbs once the soil cools.
  • Pull annuals and clear diseased plant material rather than composting it.

Hardscape and drainage

  • Clear gutters and downspouts and point drainage away from the foundation and walkways.
  • Seal cracks in concrete and pavers before water gets in and freezes.
  • Be careful with deicing salts near new concrete, lawns and plants.

Equipment and winter prep

  • Drain hoses and shut off exterior water lines as needed.
  • Service the mower and prepare snow-removal equipment or line up a plow service early.

When to hire help

Book fall cleanup crews early; good ones fill up. Ask for a written scope that says what is included and whether leaf haul-away is extra.
